Everyone who has opened the Danish hymnbook, or “Grant Me God,” can’t help noticing how many of the hymns are written by the Danish pastor, poet,and politician Nicolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig (1783-1872). 

His thoughts have left deep marks on folk high schools and, thereby, on how Danes understand themselves as a people and as Christians. 

We’ll get to know Grundtvig better by looking at different periods in Grundtvig’s life and at a couple of hymns from his own hand.
